Frequently asked questions

The performance of products and substances in this category depends on moisture availability, light and temperature conditions, soil condition, including acidity level, and other factors.

Fertiliser quality and chemical composition should be tested when changing supplier. Testing may also be carried out in other situations where it is necessary to determine the key parameters of the fertiliser.

Samples should be placed in the container specified by the laboratory staff and sent to the laboratory by post. Alternatively, samples may be delivered to the office in person. The most suitable submission method depends on the client’s location.

The waiting period depends on several factors, including laboratory workload, the number of samples and the type of tests required. The exact completion date can be confirmed during consultation.

Fertiliser testing

Agricultural producers in Ukraine actively use fertilisers to improve soil composition and create optimal conditions for crop development. However, only high-quality products can deliver the expected results, while counterfeit or ineffective substances may sometimes appear on the market. It is not always possible to identify the difference visually.

For this reason, it is advisable to order quality testing of mineral fertilisers, as well as other types of fertiliser products. Testing helps determine product quality and precise chemical composition. These services are provided by MicroBio Laba agricultural laboratory. The laboratory performs a full range of tests required by agricultural producers at different stages of crop cultivation. It is important to note that MicroBio Laba is not a fertiliser manufacturer, but a laboratory that carries out testing and expert assessment of such substances.

Why is fertiliser testing needed?

Farms and agricultural companies usually require large quantities of fertilisers. If such a volume of product turns out to be of poor quality, the business may suffer significant losses. Chemical testing of mineral fertilisers and other types of products helps prevent these consequences. The procedure is required for several purposes:

  • checking a new supplier;
  • obtaining data for accurate individual calculation of application rates for solutions and products;
  • obtaining information on composition and quality;
  • identifying counterfeit products.

In some cases, chemical testing is also carried out to assess the stability of fertiliser products during transportation and storage.

What does chemical fertiliser testing include?

The procedure is comprehensive. It involves measuring dozens of parameters that provide an understanding of the chemical composition and other characteristics of the product. The laboratory has the required equipment and reagents for this purpose.

Testing is carried out for all types of fertiliser products, including organic, mineral and microbial fertilisers. A specific method and technology are applied to each category. If you would like to order fertiliser testing, it is advisable to consult the laboratory team first. This will help determine the number and type of procedures required, taking into account your individual request.

What parameters are measured during testing?

To determine the quality and composition of fertilisers used to support plant development, laboratory specialists test a range of parameters. These include:

  • the mass fraction of ammonium nitrate in UAN solution and urea;
  • the presence of organic matter;
  • nitrogen forms: amide, ammonium, nitrate and total nitrogen;
  • the amount and type of micronutrients;
  • pH level;
  • fulvic acids;
  • moisture content.

The list also includes moisture content, ash content of the dry residue and other characteristics.

Which fertilisers are tested in the laboratory?

MicroBio Laba has the necessary equipment and tools to test all types of fertiliser products.

Testing of mineral fertilisers

This category includes testing of the following types of fertilisers:

  • potassium fertilisers, including potassium salt, potassium sulphate, potassium chloride and potassium magnesium sulphate;
  • phosphate fertilisers, including phosphate rock, superphosphate and precipitated phosphate;
  • nitrogen fertilisers, including urea, ammonium nitrate, ammonium water and UAN solution;
  • chemical soil amendments, including limestone flour, gypsum and chalk;
  • compound fertilisers, including ammophos, potassium nitrate, nitroammophoska and others.

The laboratory can also test micronutrient fertilisers, for example boron, copper, zinc and other types.

Testing of organic fertilisers

Clients can order testing of substances of natural origin. Chemical testing of organic fertilisers includes the analysis of livestock and crop production waste, vermicompost, peat mixtures, peat and bottom sediments.

Testing of microbial fertilisers

The range of services also includes testing of microbial fertilisers for plants. During the procedure, laboratory specialists determine the number and type of microorganisms contained in this category of substances.

Fertiliser testing: stages

After receiving a client’s request, laboratory specialists clarify the details and help select the appropriate tests. The type of procedures depends on the type of product and other factors. The next stage is sample submission. Samples may be sent by post or delivered during a visit to the laboratory. The laboratory then performs the required work and provides the client with the results within the agreed timeframe. The results are issued in the form of an expert report.

What is the cost of fertiliser testing?

The cost of chemical testing of organic fertilisers and other types of substances is indicated in the price list. However, the final cost may be affected by additional factors. For example, if samples are collected independently or a large number of procedures is ordered, the cost may be reduced.

How can the test results be used?

The information provided by the laboratory makes it possible to determine the composition and quality of products used for plant nutrition. This helps assess how effective the product is and how much of it is required. In addition, testing can help identify counterfeit products and accurately calculate application rates.
